Impulsive Impetuous Impatient Imperfect

by Kathleen Higham

How often do we pray?
With a question about the why
When faith is shakey at best
Then we moan, groan, and sigh.

Whatever the trouble befalling
It was insidiously there
So boldly we confront it
Impulsively take on the dare.

How often do we pray?
With an arrogance undenied
The prayer becomes a demand
Impetuous thoughts bring pride.

I can surely attest to this
When to my God I say
Answer my prayer immediately
Impatient, I want it today.

How often do we pray?
In the quiet of the night
A tear drying on a cheek
Imperfect, but in His sight.

There is a time to surrender
Then a peace you will find
As thoughts that betray you
Will leave your burdened mind.

How often do we pray?
Expectng His answer to come now
Impulsive, impetuous, impatient, but
His Word is perfect somehow.

How often do we pray?
And is it in His will?
Imperfect, but it matters not
Because God will love us still.
