One Second Old

by Kathleen Higham

I am having a bad day
Mystic waters flushed away
A crushing, pulling sensation
Exploding light comes my way.

I am having a bad day
My skin shivers in the cold
Eyes squeezed shut, terrified
And I'm only one second old.

The sounds are alarmingly loud
But the words seem familiar now
Is it she, the one called Mother?
I believe it is somehow.

Remembering those restless nights
To me her prayers would call
Then sweetly sing a love song
About He, who created all.

I am having a bad day
My body is sensitive to touch
Firm hands grasp me tightly
Oh my, it is just too much.

I am having a bad day
A voice whispers in my ear
Warmth surrounds me once again
Her voice soothes my raging fear.

This grueling day is behind me
She cries as the story is told
A thousand kisses cover me, when
I was only one second old.
