A Martyr For Christ

by Margaret Cagle

In the first church, Stephen was a deacon.
His light shone for the Lord as a beacon.
To convert the Jews was Stephen's goal.
He preached a long sermon with all his soul.

The more he preached, the angrier they became.
They didn't want him to exalt Jesus' name.
Stephen's sermon cut them to the heart.
Gnashing him with teeth, many took part.

Deacon Stephen was full of the Holy Ghost
And never of himself did he ever boast.
Looking up to Heaven, he saw Jesus stand
There in Glory at the Father's right hand.

They charged at Stephen in one accord
As Stephen was communing with the Lord.
"Cast him out and stone him!" cried all.
They lay their clothes at the feet of Saul.

Stephen prayed, "Lord, my spirit receive."
On his Savior, he wanted them to believe.
"Lay not this sin to their charge!" he cried.
He gave up the ghost, and there he died.

Deacon Stephen was a martyr for our Savior.
He's an example of good Christian behavior.
He died preaching and gets a martyr's reward.
We can be willing to die, but live for the Lord.
