Apathy and Fire

by Kathleen Higham

To be robbed of desire
Is what apathy means to me
When life becomes so burdensome
A heart no longer care-free.

Often apathy comes disguised
In a sin you cannot bear
Takes you to the darkest place
Makes one wonder if you care.

Apathy fuels your hopelessness
Drowns His Word in despair
Hiding in a tiny ember, yet
A flame is raging there.

Sorrow breeds with emotion
When an ember cools with fear
Do not surrender to apathy
Just let the Lord draw near.

For apathy does not care
When tears no longer flow
Then prayers become silent
And there is no place to go.

Passion will come to rescue
When apathy takes its hold
Stuns your faith completely
Allows a body to grow cold.

Desire will burn once again
Fire surges from the flame
Apathy will flee the soul
If you call on His holy name.

His passion feeds the fire
I pray God breathe on me
Fan the embers of my heart
Until at last I can see.

A fiery trail to Heaven
Exploding in His light
Unfailing love consumes me
Smothering my sin this night.

No longer robbed of desire
The fire is everywhere
Apathy has burned away
Then I know, I feel, I care...
