Love Thy Neighbor

by Margaret Cagle

They couldn't get along with their neighbors.
It's not that they tried very hard.
They fussed about noise.
They fussed about toys.
They fussed about trash in the yard.

These neighbors seemed to hate each other,
And that was really plain to see.
They would argue and fight
Over which one was right.
Yes, it did seem joyful to disagree.

One day a plane crashed on both houses
Because of very turbulent weather.
They were so sad,
They forgot to be mad,
And they faced this tragedy together.

Now these neighbors started sharing
Whatever they could with each other,
But what a big price
It took to be nice
And treat your neighbor like a brother.

They discovered that all the adults
Were saved, and they knew the Lord.
It was hard to know it,
For they didn't show it,
Because of all their past discord.

They now sought to help each other.
They were sorry for the way they behaved.
To be very exact,
They now wanted to act
Like neighbors who truly were saved.
