You Are Everything

by Kathleen Higham

I wish I was all these things
That you think me to be
I wish I was everything
God desires and hopes for me.

A lonely corner in my heart
That holds a silent plea
Where God wants to enter, but
There is no room, you see.

For I had not surrendered
It seemed a small desire
To read the worldly diction
Till it burned into a fire.

I wish I was all these things
All these things and more
Then I escaped one last sin
Through God's exit door.

Dark trailed behind in words
He will always light the way.
Words that lost their godliness
God cleaned my house today.

Oh my literary life it seems
Had caught me by surprise
So comfortable I had become
That I believed the devil's lies.

But you can be everything
For you are what you read
I wish I was all these things
But my God is all I need.
