It Wonders Me

by Kathleen Higham

Happiness is a diversion
Bemoaning a nebulous quest
Embodies an emotional dichotomy
This feeling fleeting at best.

Happiness, it wonders me
When love consumes so much
Oh, how it wonders me
A gnawing ache to touch.

Then honor another trophy
To those who are so bold
They pursue it ever constant
Believing at last they hold.

A one and only moment in time
Runs through them fearfully
Here, then gone forevermore
Life evolves, becomes history.

Happiness, it wonders me
Desiring to own, then embrace
Solitude, truth, aloneness
Can one be captive in this place?

Happiness now so elusive
By an incongruence of greed
Greed that is never conquered
Enslaved with insatiable need.

It wonders me, wonders me
For those who possess it all
Yet still they chase, run
Race to the impending fall.

But a longing search prevails
Wealth now bitter and sour
Living moment to moment
Deluded by the darkness of power.

Happiness, it wonders me
As it pleads, look deep within
Inside the soul freedom reigns
Coincides with joy, love, sin.

It doesn't matter if or what
Or how your life will end
Happiness, happiness is loving God
More than oneself, my friend.

Mark 12:30
And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.
