Brain Control

by Robert Hedrick

Slow down tongue, you are talking way too fast,
Remember the problems you've caused in the past.
In spitting out those words that just weren't right,
Tongue, you'd have been better off to remained quiet.

Today you almost brought a relationship to it's end,
As you blurted out some choice words to an old friend.
It was the strong bond that kept this friendship intact,
In allowing me an opportunity to take the harsh words back.

You give me the message that you're not the one to blame,
This just is not your problem for it belongs to the brain.
If only it would kick into gear and screen out every word,
Likely then there'll be a better conversation that is heard.

Engaging the brain will sure help the tongue's selection,
With the greeting of an old friend having more affection.
Some thought before speaking can certainly make a better day,
With a bond being a little stronger as friends walk away.
