America's Beloved Hymn Singer

by Margaret Cagle

A great hymn singer is George Beverly Shea.
I could listen to his singing all day.
He has sung for the Lord for many years.
He has blessed so many hearts and ears.

When he sings "How Great Thou Art,"
It gives me joy and blesses my heart.
When he sings "The Wonder Of It All,"
On my knees in praise, I want to fall.

"I'd Rather Have Jesus," a hymn he wrote,
Really touches my heart with every note.
"In Tenderness He Sought Me," I heard him sing.
To my eyes, many tears it did bring.

George Beverly Shea sang for many decades
In many, many of Billy Graham's crusades.
His singing touched so many who've heard,
And thousands of souls his hymns have stirred.

This beloved hymn singer is getting old.
He is over a hundred years now, I'm told.
One day, in person, I'll hear him more
As he sings over on that golden shore.
