Father May I

by Donna Hendrix

Mother may I was a game we used to play
Mother may I was fun on a warm summer day
Mother would tell you how many steps to take
Mother may I, you would ask, or no steps you'd get to make
Mother may I take that giant leap
Mother may I take those steps so steep
In this game you were at mother's mercy and grace
Without her permission you would never win the race
Of course it was just a silly game that you played with your friends
It really didn't matter who the winner was in the end

Father may I should be a game that we all play
For Father is the creator of the universe to whom we all should pray
Father may I accept your precious gift of mercy and grace
That you have so unselfishly offered to all the human race
Father may I please have Jesus come into my heart
Father may I have my sins forgiven and your love to impart
Father may I, we should ask in every choice that we make
Father may I, we should ask of every road that we take
Father may I seek to glorify your name
Father may I never seek worldly riches and fame
Father may I always seek to do your will
And know that you're all I need in life for me to be fulfilled
Father may I choose eternal life over death
And may you recognize me as your child when I take my last breath
Of course this is not a game that you play with your friends
But it really, really matters if you're a winner in the end!
