In the East

by Donna Hendrix

In the east there was a bright and shining star
That gave direction to us from afar
It shone upon the stable where the baby Jesus lay
Sleeping soundly in a manger filled with hay

Wise men and shepherds traveled far and wide
A glimpse of the newborn King to spy
The angels praised Him in glorious song
They knew on this earth He didn't belong

Even the barnyard animals knelt to pray
For they knew that a special child had come to us this day
God sent His son to live on this earth
Born to man through a most miraculous birth

He was sent to us to pay the cost for our sin
So that one day we could have eternal life through Him
He walked this earth a short thirty three years
Our sinless, blameless Savior who wept human tears

He healed the sick and comforted the tired
And gave to us God's word that so inspires
He was always lending His helping hand
Spreading God's love so that all could understand

He carried His cross through the streets of the city
Never once looking for human pity
He willingly died upon the cross for you and me
An innocent man who could easily have been set free

His Father could have sent an army of angels to save his life
But He chose to accept the suffering and the strife
Three days later He arose from the grave
Our Jesus, our Master, who came to save

He ascended to heaven to live with the Father
Awaiting His children, who will someday follow
Jesus came to save us knowing he would suffer great pain
He loved us unconditionally and had nothing to gain

And how the Father must have mourned for His only son
Allowing Him to die in order for His will to be done
How much greater can our earthly sufferings be
Than that of our Father who gave all for you and me.
