Little Donkey

by Donna Hendrix

Little donkey walked many miles
Traveler on his back all the while
Woman riding; man did walk
How little donkey wished he could talk
What a story to tell his little one
His part played in the coming of the Son

Little donkey walked many miles
Traveler on his back all the while
They came to the town of Bethlehem
Where they ended was no whim
It was our holy Father's plan
To bring them to this holy land

Little donkey walked many miles
Traveler on his back all the while
No room in the inn, he heard them say
The stable would do, this very day
Young woman rider needed rest
Time was near; with child she was blessed

Little donkey had walked many miles
Traveler on his back all the while
Now was time to rest and wait
For now was the long awaited date
Little donkey waited with the others
The cattle, the sheep looking from one to another

Little donkey heard a soft sound
Silently he looked to see what could be found
There was a baby lying in a manger filled with hay
Immediately he knew the Savior had come today
He and the cattle and sheep bowed on bended knee
Worshiping the King who had come to be

Little donkey watched as the wise men came from afar
And he saw over the stable a brightly shining star
He saw shepherds coming in from the fields that night
All to worship the Savior; our guiding light
What a story to tell about an amazing love
That came to earth from the Father above

Little donkey didn't mind walking many miles
With the blessed Virgin Mary on his back all the while
He was now part of the greatest story on earth
The story of the Messiah's miraculous birth
A part of this most Holy Night of which we sing
He would gladly walk many more miles for the King
