What Good Am I?

by Kathleen Higham

Awaken, awaken to the sun
Vaguely aware of another day
Thoughts of life intrude again
Repetition of words, I pray.

Nothing changes, so it seems
What now, what now, I cry?
Life weighs heavy with my query
Lord, Lord, what good am I?

Oh, the patience of a God
Who hears my pitiful plea
Then opens His merciful heart
And speaks these words to me.

"I have given you experience
Knowledge in the harshness of life
Fruits of extraordinary strength
Come with sorrow and strife.

These gifts in time hold peace
From them you choose to teach
Imagine if I hadn't given the gift
All those you could not reach."

Awaken, awaken to the sun
Another day presents the need
Pain instructs those who cry to God
Souls come wearily to be freed.

Experience touches suffering hearts
Understanding in a peaceful sigh
My God has plans to prosper me
It matters not, what good am I.

Jeremiah 29:11

"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
