The Only Son

by Kathleen Higham

"There are no words," I said
Reaching out to wipe her tear
A stranger I had never met
Yet God would draw us near.

"I lost my son, my only son"
In her brokenness came a plead
We shared the intimacy of grief
And the heart of a woman's creed.

For only a mother can understand
The sorrow of the ultimate pain
A trial comes so unspeakable
As the fires pour down like rain.

"Oh my God," she cries out!
My son was everything that mattered
Now a heart beats cold and empty
Her world was completely shattered.

The sun may shine, not for her
Relentlessly, time passes even still
When a memory plagues her soul
Of a man dragging a cross up a hill.

"I lost my son, my only son"
In the despair of that night
But the mother of God before me
Knew, that agony brings the light.

The Son of God, the only Son
Who was crucified to fill our need
So a dark and void heart could speak
The words of a mother's creed.

"Oh my God," she cries out!
You're work in me is never done
To perpetuate forever, a woman's creed
For our Lord and Savoir, the only Son.
