The Seven Year Old Adult

by Kathleen Higham

I hear the sweetness in her voice
Her questions fill my head
I haven't got the answers yet
And I ponder the words we said

She has a precious love for life
And the depth of her thoughts amaze me
As she asked me about a child that died
And wonders how old he might be

I too wonder about things of heaven
And what happens to the children there
She tells me she feels a sadness
A seven year old knows how to care

She told me she loves everyone
Even people who are not kind
I wish I could be like that
Possessing her Christ like mind

She asked me how much I love her
I felt like this was a test
Then she answered the question for me
Grandma you love God the best

I marveled at her simplicity
As we talk of her grownup years
She wants to love all the animals
My laughter is mingled with tears

As we talk I embrace this child
She lives in the depths of my heart
As the miles that separate us fade away
In my mind we are never apart

And every time I speak with her
I imagine her next to me
Looking into the eyes of a seven year old
It's incredible what this child can see
