The Penny

by Kathleen Higham

Every morning I feel a peace
And thoughtfully I pray
That I will not entertain myself
In the world as it is today

And each day as I walk with you
As I'm looking at the ground
I often see a treasure
It's the penny that I've found

And they are always cast away
They are meaningless to most
But I stoop down to pick it up
And feel that I should boast

My friends they actually laugh at me
They think I've lost my mind
Why would you even bother
But the penny is one of a kind

Because the T.V. tells a story
The news is filled with hate
And there are people everywhere
Who believe they can change our fate

Our courts are filled with hostility
Bright people make their demand
Take away the name of God
Remove Him from this land

And I am truly baffled
By their bitter raging wrath
Why are they so angry
As they walk this evil path

And yet I feel a ray of hope
As I pick up another penny
Pennies from Heaven comes to mind
Because there are so many

This world might take away His name
And some feel that they must
But etched in the penny is His truth
As it reads "In God We Trust"
