Awe

by Paul Purday

In lowlands we will upward look
To heights unreachable that will
Seem unobtainable to most
The mountains far beyond the hill
For that's as far as we have been
And now content to view the heights
With sadness where we could have climbed
And now would miss the far delights
Of huge perspectives that will show
A different viewpoint there to be
For others who have made the climb
And say with pride what they can see
But their attainment may not know
The wonder of a greater view…..
We stand back now, take in with awe
And let these scenes our minds subdue…..

A calm and quickening beauty fills
Our spirits, at the view beyond
For mountains and indeed all scenes
Are painted with the Maker's wand
For eye has never seen, nor has
It entered to the heart of man
Where Everest is a lowland hill
Where greater mountain vista's span
Beyond imagination's reach
The Great Creator's hands have formed
This beauty upon beauty now
His pleasure in a work performed
And planned in the eternal Mind
Which also would include a Cross
Anticipated by that Mind, that man Instead of awe, will seek such dross
To fill his mind and lose his way
To trivialities that show
That he has lost the awe of God
With only earthly aims to know…..

Let's lift our sights to things above
And see with awe where Jesus lives
To fix our eyes on Him alone
Who every earthly spring outlives
The heavenly Land of beauty is
Where wondering awe and mercy meet
And praising hosts round Jesus stand
Then fall and worship at His feet…..
