AMERICA'S INDEPENDENCE

by Kristine Stanton © 2024

The US of America—
one nation under God—
life, liberty and happiness—
the land where freedom's trod. . .

'Twas on this day—July the fourth—
so many years ago,
America broke free at last
from being kept in tow.

A declaration was devised—
directed toward the King,
the colonists, and all the world—
its goals for rallying. . .

It was designed to sever ties
with Britain and its King,
and listed all the colonists'
rights for revolting.

Its purpose was to win allies
who'd come to join their fight
against the Earth's most powerful
nation in their sight.

The colonists had wanted to
announce a new country,
and separate from Great Britain
to gain their liberty.

And now the US celebrates
the first who colonized.
We celebrate our nationhood—
our freedom's recognized.

Yes. . .

America commemorates
the day that it broke free—
the very day it had declared
its freedom—liberty.
