The Ascent

by Gertrude Jefferies

I stood alone, in a deep pit
No other man in sight.
And all around was gloom and fear
Not one small gleam of light.

The darkness penetrated deep
It was so very cold.
It seemed no one could bring the light,
No one could warm my soul.

I tried so many times to climb
And each time I would fall.
Then in the dark I heard a voice,
"I'll help you, if you call.

You want to climb up by yourself,
To make it on your own.
But it's too steep, and you can't see
To make it all alone."

I stopped and listened to the voice,
It seemed like one I'd known.
And then I knew it was the Lord,
He'd come to lead me home.

Then in the dark we started up,
I could not clearly see
The many pitfalls on the way,
That would mean death to me.

He tightly clasped my hand in His
For I was so afraid,
And as we started up I saw
A path for me was made.

Wherever He would place His feet,
Gave light for me to see.
And I would follow in His steps
In quiet certainty.

The light grew brighter as we climbed,
Around me I could see,
With vision clearer than before,
The path He'd marked for me.

And now I'm walking on my own,
Yet not alone, you see,
For He will always be nearby,
To keep me company.
