Living Water

by Dave Mudford © 2023

Throat parched by dry winds,
breathing in the harshness of my days,
gasping from the weight of sins,
Selfishness; more than a passing phase;
longing for life
stuck in my strife,
My soul blinded by a constant haze.

Defeated by hunger pangs,
consuming lollies of no worth,
hope slipping through feeble hands,
Fears rekindled and given berth;
starving my dreams
my doubt now screams,
Searching for satisfaction rebirth.

Quenching His Spirit with my pride,
loneliness threatens to explode,
emptiness despite how I've tried,
Discontentment has overflowed;
hurting and alone
purpose unknown,
Worldly nourishment bestowed.

Promise of life now draws near,
breathing in the love of His heart,
true worship becomes quite clear,
Jesus offered a brand-new start;
living water
He brought-her;
Dryness of life can now depart.

Living water we can partake,
receiving the blessing of our Christ,
earthly diets we should forsake,
Forgetting not what He sacrificed;
knowing hope lives
through what He gives
From His supply, never be enticed.

Peace infiltrates my inner being,
contentment now found and increased,
to Jesus we need to be fleeing,
So, thirst and hunger can be released;
dreams refreshed
fears addressed,
Into the refuge of His feast.

Note: Poem is reflecting on the conversation between Jesus and the woman at the well.

John 4:13-14 NIV Jesus answered, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life."
