The Next Good Thing

Could we perhaps resist
the darkness that despair does bring,
simply by looking in our lives for the birth of the next good thing?

It could be a wedding, the birth of a child, a time of reconciliation.
When a blessed event to your life is sent
it is goodness's firm attestation.

It may be something simple
that's waiting in the wings:
a cherished token of a kind word spoken
or a song that the robin sings.

The sweet, simple style of a baby's smile
can become a bright ray of hope.
A bouquet of flowers has wonderful powers
in helping us to cope.

Tis true that all is not right with the world,
but goodness and gladness can still be unfurled.
So wait for it, watch for it.
Cease not to look
in every corner and cranny and nook.
Though sorrow and misery seem to abound,
God's goodness in spite of it, still can be found.

« I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living. » Psalm 27:13
