Paid In Full

by Jennifer Kirkendall © 2023

I once owed a debt,
So steep I couldn't pay.
I was sentenced to death,
Then I fell on my knees to pray.

I begged for forgiveness,
I was sorry for what I had done,
Then I heard a voice,
It said, "Look up at my Son."

As I looked up,
I felt so much shame.
I saw Jesus on my cross,
I knew that I was to blame.

I saw His blood poured out,
It was the brightest red.
It should have been mine,
But He chose to die instead.

He hung there in agony,
Until He took His final breath.
They placed Him in a tomb,
But then He defeated death.

Then I heard the sweetest words,
That I could ever hear,
"Your debt is paid in full,"
And my eyes filled up with tears.

He held up His nail scarred hands,
And said, " All because of Me,
You are no longer condemned,
You have been set free."

Now I am no longer judged,
By all the mistakes I've made,
But by His perfect life,
And the love He displayed.

So, thank you precious Jesus,
For Your saving grace,
I know that You love me,
Because You willingly took my place.
