If You Ask

by Mark Spencer © 2023

Jesus posted on Marketplace,
Asking for servants, filled with grace!
Many answered the Savior's call,
Their confidence was their downfall!

They claimed that they were qualified,
And for this reason, they applied.
They went to church, and said their prayers,
Their virtues filled their questionnaires.

But I had no virtues to list,
In me, such things did not exist!
And if I tried to fly that flag,
The Lord would see a filthy rag!

I have but one thing I can give:
A humble soul that wants to live!
For that is not what it has done,
There is no life without the Son!

I read the bible, and I pray,
I go to church every Sunday.
Not because that makes me right,
Or clean within God's righteous sight,

It is because I am unclean,
A truth the Lord has also seen.
He knows the sins that stain my soul,
And still, He chose to pay my toll!

So I will serve as He sees fit,
Resolved and ready to submit!
I am a sinner, not a saint,
God's love has strengthened my restraint!

And understanding what I am,
Made clean by, the blood of the Lamb,
I'll serve Him as a servant should,
And not because I think I'm good!

I'm qualified because I failed.
I've gnashed my teeth, and I have wailed!
And in despair, I sought release,
Until He came, and brought me peace!

I owe you everything my Lord!
Because of you, I was restored!
I'll serve you in both peace and strife,
And if you ask, I'll give my life!
